Fiennes joins Gervais's 'Men At The Pru'

By Alex Fletcher, Senior Entertainment Reporter

Ralph Fiennes has joined the cast of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's new comedy The Men At The Pru.

The project is the first time Merchant and Gervais have worked together on the big screen.

Gervais revealed last year that the film would be a "coming of age" story about 20-somethings working at a building society in the early '70s. Shooting begins later this year.

Fiennes's other upcoming projects include Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Clash Of The Titans and the sequel to Nanny McPhee.

Ralph Fiennes Is A Man At The Pru

Set to star in Gervais/Merchant comedy

Ralph Fiennes is a busy boy these days. Not only did today bring the news that the Oscar-nominated actor is set to join the cast of Clash Of The Titans as Hades, lord of the underworld, but it’s also emerged that he’s set to join the cast of The Men At The Pru, the new comedy from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

It’s not yet known who Fiennes will be playing in the 70s-set comedy, which will mark the first time that The Office and Extras creators have written and directed a movie together. But it’s always good to see Fiennes, with a reputation for being ultra-serious, exercising his funnybone. Didn’t do him any harm in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, did it?

The Men At The Pru will start shooting later this year, giving Fiennes time to sort out a scheduling… well, let’s say clash of the titans between that, Clash Of The Titans (of course), his role as Voldemort in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part II, and a cameo in the sequel to Nanny McPhee.

Oh, and after that little lot, he’s going to make his directorial debut on a movie version of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. As ever, we wish him well.

GERVAIS DELIGHT AT LANDING FIENNES

RICKY GERVAIS has managed to snag a Hollywood star for his big-screen directorial debut - award-winning actor RALPH FIENNES has signed on to star in CEMETERY JUNCTION.

The British comedian has written his first movie with Stephen Merchant - his fellow creator of hit TV show The Office - which the pair will co-direct.

And Gervais is delighted he has managed to persuade Fiennes to take on a role in the upcoming comedy about a group of 20-somethings working at a bank in the 1970s.

Gervais says, "I bumped into him (Fiennes) at the Toronto Film Festival and told him I had written a part with him in mind. I sent him the script and what do you now? He is an amazing actor and will bring a real weight to the movie. Can't wait."

Filming on Cemetery Junction - which was originally due to be called The Men At The Pru - is scheduled to start later this year (09).

Started scouting locations today for CEMETERY JUNCTION.

You may have read that we've cast Ralph Fiennes, which is fantastic. I bumped into him at the Toronto Film Festival and told him I had written a part with him in mind. I sent him the script and what do you know. He is such an amazing actor and will bring a real weight to the movie. Can't wait.

Talking of great Englishmen you don't get much more patriotic than Billy Bragg.

Now you probably all know his anthem New England but you may not have heard the beautiful tribute to his late father - Tank Park Salute.

It should make you cry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So we finally decided on the title of our film set in the 1970's about class and love in a small town - CEMETERY JUNCTION.

There's something retro and weighty about it without feeling gritty or pretentious. It sounds like a 60's novel. Yes? Good.

I'm really enjoying my 'Celebrate The English' campaign. It's like "art and history" DJing.

Here's a nice little slide show of my favourite painter.

Ricky Gervais talks Cemetery Junction

Story by Jack Foley

RICKY Gervais has been talking of his delight at starting work on new movie Cemetery Junction, which finds him writing and directing with Stephen Merchant for the first time on the big screen.

Principal photography commences on June 15, 2009 with a cast including Ralph Fiennes, Gervais himself and stars-of-the-future Christian Cooke, Felicity Jones, Tom Hughes and Jack Doolan.

Cemetery Junction, formerly known as The Men At The Pru, is the first motion picture to be written and directed by Gervais and Merchant following on from their multi-award winning TV successes, The Office and Extras.

It tells the funny, touching, universal story of being trapped in a small town and dreaming of escape and is set in 1970s England.

Freddie (Christian Cooke) wants to leave their working-class world but cool, charismatic Bruce (Tom Hughes) and lovable loser Snork (Jack Doolan) are happy with life the way it is.

When Freddie gets a new job as a door-to-door salesman and bumps into his old school sweetheart Julie (Felicity Jones), the gang are forced to make choices that will change their lives for ever.

Commenting on their latest venture, Gervais and Merchant said: “We want to capture the spirit of those classic British New Wave movies of the 1960s that made stars of Albert Finney, Julie Christie and Michael Caine.

“We’re so excited about our fresh young cast – they are all film stars in waiting. Cemetery Junction is going to be glossy and glorious, full of humour, romance and drama as well as our usual observations on the truth and absurdity of real life.

“The fact that Ralph Fiennes is also on board to add depth and class to the whole thing is just unbelievable icing on the cake.”

Deborah Schindler, President of International Motion Picture Production at Sony Pictures, added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with two of the UK’s foremost writing and directing talents.

“Ricky and Stephen’s past successes have proved not only their unparallelled understanding of comedy but also their ability to create realistic stories and characters with worldwide appeal. Add to this the exciting ensemble cast and we know we have a movie for all audiences.”

Cemetery Junction will shoot on location in and around London and is based at Shepperton studios. The film is produced by Sue Baden-Powell and Charlie Hanson and executive producers are Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has worldwide rights and will be releasing the film in cinemas in 2010.
