Cameras roll in Tenerife for Clash of the Titans

Produced by Warner Bros Pictures, the island will gross 2.5m Euros with Hollywood big budget movie

Shooting begins this week in Tenerife on the set of the Warner Bros. Pictures big budget movie “Clash of the Titans”. Tenerife will earn two and a half million Euros in revenue during the two weeks of filming. José Manuel Bermúdez, the first vice president and councillor for tourism at the Tenerife Island Government, stresses the importance of bringing a major film production to the island starring Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes.

Warner Bros Pictures will fly a 350-strong production team to Tenerife to work on the island from 15 May to 3 June 2009. A substantial part of the 2.5m euro budget will be spent on accommodation, transport and maintenance. They will also hire one hundred local people on the island as extras for different scenes and a variety of support staff including a Tenerife company, Sur Production & Services, who have managed the castings for the extras, found offices and obtained the required permits etc.

Tenerife was selected as a location for the movie thanks to an initiative by the Tenerife Film Commission. Last October, the film’s location manager, Robin Higgs (Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter trilogies) was invited on a fam-trip and was amazed by Tenerife’s landscapes. Many meetings and visits followed, including the film’s director and producer who then decided to shoot some of the film - nearly 20 per cent of the total - on the island. The selected locations are the Teide National Park and the coast in the districts of Icod, Buenavista del Norte and Guía de Isora plus some pinewoods and mountain areas.

“Clash of the Titans” is an adventure filled epic which tells the tale of the war between men, kings and the gods. Based on the cult 1981 film of the same name, the storyline revolves around the myth of Perseus and his quest to save Princess Andromeda. The release date is set for early 2010.

The Island Government’s Department of Tourism has counted on the support of both the Tenerife Departments of the Environment and Roads as well as the Canary Islands Government and the National Parks.

The movie’s director is Louis Leterrier, who also directed “The Incredible Hulk” and “Danny the Dog”. Leading the international cast is Australian actor Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation) as Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, king of the gods. Liam Neeson (Schindler’s List) takes on the role of the mighty Zeus, and Ralph Fiennes plays the role of Hades, god of the underworld, who feeds on human fear. Rounding out the cast is Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) as Io, Perseus’ mysterious spiritual guide throughout his journey; Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) as Draco, who takes up his sword to join Perseus’ quest; Jason Flemyng (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as Acrisius, a one-time king-turned-hideous beast; and Alexa Davalos (Defiance) as Andromeda, a princess doomed to lose her life if Perseus does not succeed.

The film's producers are Kevin De La Noy (The Dark Knight) and Basil Iwanyk (We Are Marshall). The executive producers are Richard D. Zanuck, one of the most honoured leaders in the motion picture industry (Yes Man) and Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and William Fay (300). Associate producer is Karl McMillan (Public Enemies) and the production designer is Martin Laing (Titanic).

The running of last remake left Hollywood, Fury of Titanes, will begin shortly in Tenerife. The personnel of the Technical Service of Highways of the Insular Town hall has received instructions already to close, in principle between days 20 of April and 2 of May, some sections of highway within the National Park of the Teide, one of the locations chosen by the director, Louis Leterrier. The objective of these cuts is to facilitate its work to the accomplishment equipment, being prevented that the traffic and possible the peculiar ones accede to the zones of work.

At the end of the month last, the blogosfera cinéfila became echo (it connects in English) of the entrance in the distribution of the Briton Gemma Arterton (RocknRolla, Quantum of Solace), while the dates for the beginning of the running in this island scored: three weeks from the 30 of March. On the other hand, this same Sunday the newspaper the Country announced the entrance in films of another actor, Liam Neeson, and determined the beginning of the works at the end of month. Now, the official notice sent to the Service of Highways seems to make specific when they will arrive titanes at the island.

The election of several enclaves in the Canary Islands to roll an overproduction of these characteristics (it counts on a budget of more than 80 million dollars) is no unnoticed past in the Government of the Canary Islands. In a note published the past 2 of April in his page Web, the regional Executive informed into the company/signature of an agreement with the South-Film company to record aerial images and sound in the national parks of the Teide, Garajonay and Timanfaya. This material will be used in Fury of Titanes and the islands, of a form or another one, will have appear in the credits.

What it is not clear is what cinema stars will travel to Tenerife to participate in the running. We will see Liam Neeson taking a walk by Santa Cruz?

Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes godlike in "Titans"

By Borys Kit

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes will play warring gods in "Clash of the Titans," an Olympian epic that starts shooting later this month

Neeson is playing Zeus, the wise yet sometimes ill-tempered king of the gods and father of Perseus (Sam Worthington).

Fiennes ("The Reader") will play Hades, ruler of the underworld who aims to dethrone Zeus and rule over all.

Louis Leterrier will shoot the Warner Bros. film in the U.K.

The deal marks Neeson's first since the death of his wife, Natasha Richardson, in a skiing accident last month. The deal was initiated before the tragedy. His thriller "Taken," released earlier this year, has proven to be a surprise hit, earning almost $140 million domestically.

Ralph Fiennes in talks for 'Titans'

Actor may play Hades in Louis Leterrier film
By ALI JAAFAR

LONDON -- Ralph Fiennes is in advanced negotiations to star as Hades, the lord of the underworld, in helmer Louis Leterrier's "Clash of the Titans" for Warner Bros.

Liam Neeson is set to co-star as Zeus in the reimagining of the Greek myth of Perseus.

Fiennes would join a cast that already includes, in addition to Neeson, Gemma Arterton, Mads Mikkelsen, Alexa Davalos and Sam Worthington in the reimagining of the Greek myth of Perseus.

"Clash" marks the first new project for Neeson since the death of his wife, actress Natasha Richardson, last month.

Fiennes is also in talks to star in 1970s-set coming-of-age laffer "The Men at the Pru," which Ricky Gervais is co-writing and directing with Stephen Merchant.

That project is set at Sony, where it will be the studio's second U.K. production greenlit by international motion picture division prexy Deb Schindler.

Thesp will also take on an uncredited cameo in Working Title's sequel to 2005 hit "Nanny McPhee," in which Emma Thompson will reprise her role as a magical governess. Brit helmer Susanna White will direct.

The main concern for Fiennes now is scheduling. The thesp wants to squeeze in all these commitments before returning to his role as uber-villain Voldemort in the final Harry Potter installment,

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II," which begins production in the fall.

Fiennes' first post-"Potter" commitment will be his directorial debut on a feature adaptation of William Shakespeare's Roman tragedy "Coriolanus."

Fiennes has already scouted for locations in Eastern Europe and is in negotiations with financiers.
