River Road Entertainment selects Serbia for location of filming “CORIOLANUS”
Ralph Fiennes will direct and play the lead in the film and was part of a
group that evaluated Serbia as a location for shooting this film in July.
The potential of the Serbian film industry has been further demonstrated with
the recent decision of River Road Entertainment to film a modern day version
of Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus” in Serbia.
Ralph Fiennes will direct and play the lead in the film and was part of a group
that evaluated Serbia as a location for shooting this film in July.
The film is a tragedy based on the life of the legendary Roman leader, Gaius
Martius Coriolanus in modern times.
Filming will start in March 2009. “What this means for Serbia is about $10
million in direct investment, and almost unlimited free publicity around the
globe as viewers of the movie will see Belgrade and Serbia in a major Hollywood
A-list production”, says Ana Ilic who leads the film and production sector in
the USAID Competitiveness Project.
This USAID project worked closely with the Serbian film production company
“Work in Progress” to secure this project for Serbia.
“Ralph Fiennes, Frank Hildebrand, Producer, and Mark Geraghty, Production Designer,
were impressed with the diversity of locations available in Belgrade and the
professionalism of the crew from “Work in Progress”.

Fiennes to direct River Road's 'Coriolanus' in Serbia
River Road Entertainment will film a modern day version of Shakespeare’s "Coriolanus"
in Serbia. Ralph Fiennes will direct and play the lead in the movie. The actor
and director Ralph Fiennes, the producer Frank Hildebrand, and the set designer
Mark Geraghty, visited Serbia as a possible filming location in July. The Federation
Palace (the SIV building) and the IMT factory in Belgrade were chosen as locations
for filming.
The crew also visited other localities in and outside of Belgrade, such as
the Belgrade’s Old Court and hotel "Yugoslavia", Deliblatska pešcara,
Petrovaradin and the “Pink” film studio in Šimanovci and were impressed by the
variety of possible filming locations in Serbia.
The film is a tragedy based on the life of the legendary Roman leader, Gaius
Martius Coriolanus. River Road Entertainment has announced that this drama will
be set in modern times and the shooting will start in March 2009. Only one previous
attempt was made to produce a film based on this work of Shakespeare. That version
was made in 1979 with Denzel Washington (in one of his earliest roles) and Morgan
Freeman as Coriolan. It is still not known who will act in this modern film,
but judging by a similar project, "Brothers Bloom" recently shot in
Serbia, we can expect to see several Serbian actors, since both films have been
made in collaboration with the Serbian production company "Work in Progress".
USAIDs Competitiveness project worked closely with the Serbian film production
company "Work in Progress" to secure this project for Serbia.
"What it means for Serbia is about $10 million in direct investment --
that’s how much American producers have set aside from the overall budget for
shooting in Serbia, and a great opportunity for Belgrade and Serbia to be promoted
through a Hollywood A production", says Ana Ilic from USAIDs Competitiveness
Project.
River Road Entertainment's productions include Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain",
Sean Penn's "Into The Wild" and Robert Altman's last movie "Prairie
Home".

Ralph Fiennes to direct 'Coriolanus'
Vanessa Redgrave in talks to join project
By ALI JAAFAR
Ralph Fiennes is making his directorial debut with a feature adaptation of
William Shakespeare's Roman tragedy "Coriolanus."
Fiennes, who stars in Stephen Daldry's "The Reader" alongside Oscar-nommed
Kate Winslet, has already scouted for locations in East Europe and is currently
in negotiations with financiers.
Shakespeare's play, set in the early years of the Roman Republic, is one of
his most politically challenging examinations of the way power corrupts.
Fiennes will also play the title role of the proud but contemptuous soldier
spurred on by his ambitious mother to run for the Roman Senate, which ultimately
leads to his downfall.
Vanessa Redgrave is in talks to play the part of Coriolanus' mother Volumnia.
